Delaware's method
Melson Formula
A more detailed formula that first sets aside each parent's own basic self-support needs, then divides the remaining income to cover the child's needs plus a share of any surplus. Used by only a few states.
Getting your actual number
This page explains the method — it doesn't calculate your amount. For an estimate, use Delaware's official child-support guidelines worksheet or calculator (search "Delaware child support calculator" on your state's judicial or child-support-services website). Because parenting time, add-ons, and judicial discretion all change the result, treat any online figure as a starting point and confirm it with a Delaware family-law attorney.
General reference only, last reviewed 2026-06. This explains the method, not your exact amount, which depends on the state worksheet and the court. LexPilot is an independent information directory.
